BAFTSS Practice Research Portfolio Awards

Get your skates on! The deadline for the BAFTSS Practice Research Portfolio Awards is the end of October!

BAFTSS invites submissions to the Practice Research categories of its 2021 Awards Competition. All entries must constitute a significant, original and rigorous contribution to knowledge.

We invite submissions in the following categories:

• Audiovisual Practice-Research: e.g. original film/TV/video/moving image/screen media practice

• Videographic Film Criticism and Moving Image Studies: e.g. online digital video essays/scholarly remixes/audio-visual film criticism

• Research Applications and Infrastructure: e.g. film and television studies research-related websites, mobile apps, online databases and archives.

• Doctoral Award: Entrants can enter in any of the above categories. We will require proof that the practice research was completed as part of doctoral study (for example an email from the Registry confirming student status or an email from the supervisor confirming the work was carried out as part of doctorate).

Individuals or research groups may submit only one entry.

Your entry must consist of a practice research portfolio, including a link to the artefact and a research statement of 500–1000 words documenting the research rationale. One output might include several related practice research projects (e.g. a series of short films) or just one (e.g. a database, a film, an app). The portfolio is intended to enable nominees to point towards the wider research context too. We ask you to define the contribution to knowledge too which can be outside the narrowly defined area of film or digital studies but can include, for example, gender and post colonial studies.

We are inviting work for the period from 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2020.

Deadline: Wednesday 30 October, 5pm

The winning work will be announced at the BAFTSS Annual Conference in April 2021. We also strongly encourage practice submissions to BAFTSS’ associated publication Open Screens, if your work has not been published elsewhere: https://openscreensjournal.com.

If you have any questions, you can contact BAFTSS Vice-Chair Charlotte Crofts at [email protected]
