BAFTSS Practice Research Awards 2023

BAFTSS invites submissions to the Practice Research categories of its 2023 Awards Competition. All entries must constitute a significant, original and rigorous contribution to knowledge.  All applicants for the BAFTSS Practice Research Awards must have a current BAFTSS membership . You can join BAFTSS here.

We invite submissions in ONE of the following categories:• Screen-based Practice Research: e.g. original film/TV/moving image/emerging and immersive media screen media practice

Videographic Film Criticism: e.g. including scholarly video/audiovisual/visual essays which explore the film object via moving images and sounds.

Doctoral Award: If you want your submission to be considered for the doctoral award, please indicate on the form. Confirmation required that the practice research was completed or is ongoing as part of doctoral study (for example an email from the Registry confirming student status or an email from the supervisor confirming the work was carried out as part of doctorate).

Your entry must consist of a portfolio including:
a) a link to the artefact (and instructions on how to access if emerging media or XR)
b) a research statement of 500–1000 words documenting the research rationale.

The portfolio is intended to enable nominees to point towards the wider research context. We ask you to define the contribution to knowledge, which can be outside the narrowly defined area of film or digital studies (e.g. humanities, gender or post-colonial studies).

We are inviting work for the period from 1 October 2021 to 31st December 2022.
Deadline for submissions: Wednesday 1 February 2023

The winning work will be announced at the BAFTSS Annual Conference in April 2023.

If you have any questions, you can contact BAFTSS Executive Council Member Shreepali Patel or Jolene Mairs-Dyer at [email protected] or [email protected]
